About this role

Amazon Robotics Technical Services (RTS) is hiring a Hardware Development Manager to lead our Custom Tools team. Custom Tools designs and delivers purpose-built mechanical and electromechanical service

Amazon Robotics Technical Services (RTS) is hiring a Hardware Development Manager to lead our Custom Tools team. Custom Tools designs and delivers purpose-built mechanical and electromechanical service tools that cannot be sourced off-the-shelf, used by Reliability Maintenance Engineering (RME) and field technicians to maintain and repair Amazon Robotics (AR) products at scale. Our tools reduce mean time to repair, eliminate ergonomic and safety risk during service tasks, and protect uptime across more than deployed technology, retrofits, and new product deployments network-wide.

You will lead a team of Hardware Development Engineers responsible for the full tool lifecycle: voice-of-field intake, mechanical and electromechanical design, prototype and validation in our BOS12 lab, manufacturing release, and field deployment. You will own on-time delivery for tool releases, expand the team's capability into electromechanical tools and more broadly automation design in hardware services.

This is a high-visibility builder role. You will partner directly with Product Engineering, RME, Customer Success Management, Field Hardware Support Engineering, Robotic Safety Engineering, and Robotics Supply Chain.

Key job responsibilities
- Lead and develop a team of Hardware Development Engineers (mechanical and electromechanical) designing custom service tools for the Amazon Robotics Fleet.
- Own the Custom Tools portfolio, establish and operate intake, prioritization, design, validation, manufacturing, and field-release mechanisms that scale with the product portfolio.
- Serve as a hardware expert your team, peers and the robotics technical services organization can lean on.
- Expand the team's electromechanical design capability. Stand up the ECO, technical review, and validation workflows for EM tools; build the EM component library.
- Increase the team’s scope beyond custom tools towards hardware services and building automated workflows and processes using software.
- Set the bar on engineering quality, design for service, and design for reliability. Run design reviews, define validation criteria, and own the field-release decision.
- Manage hiring, coaching, performance, and career development for the team. Build a strong bench of HWDEs and identify the next generation of technical and people leaders within RTS.
- Partner with Robotics Supply Chain on contract manufacturing, BOM management, and spares strategy. Partner with Robotic Safety Engineering on tool safety, ergonomics, and training.

A day in the life
You start the day reviewing the tool pipeline with your TIPM peer and design leads. A new RME pain point hits voice-of-field intake — you scope entitlement and decide if it enters this quarter's pipeline. Mid-morning you walk the BOS12 lab bench with your HDEs on a mid-build automated service station, push back on a cycle-time risk, and align validation with Product Engineering. Over lunch you sketch a hiring plan to expand your team's capabilities to enter process automation. You review an engineering change order, brief your manager, hold a 1:1 on an HDE's promotion path, and align Custom Tools deliverables with a TPM.

We build what nothing off-the-shelf can deliver, partnering across product engineering, deployment, and field support to scale serviceability across Amazon's robotics portfolio.

Basic Qualifications

- 7+ years of new hardware products development experience
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Power Engineering, or a related field
- Experience in engineering team management
- Experience in DFx (cost, test, manufacturing)

- Knowledge of industry standard CAD & FEA design tools, industry trends, and design for manufacturability

Preferred Qualifications

- Master's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Power Engineering, or a related field
- Knowledge of AWS or cloud technologies
- Experience developing products for large volume production
- Experience managing teams of 8+ engineers
